Volunteering Day: Rise Against Hunger Mandela Day

As part of Sustainable Development Goals, the South African Initiative ‘Rise Against Hunger’ committed to ending hunger in South Africa by providing raw packed meals to millions of needy people living in the country. They also prepare meals for students around the country aiming that no student should sleep with hunger. According to the CEO of Rise Against Hunger, world hunger is in the region of about 820 million people who are food insecure. And many students in South Africa are vulnerable and have no access to food.
University of the Western Cape (UWC) Rise Against Hunger Mandela Day was one day of volunteering, voluntary students were packing up enough meals for all needy students, the event took place at the UWC Student Centre on 1st august 2019. This program was not only for UWC students but also for the other universities had the same activity. The ingredients of the essential packing meals include rice, mix vegetables and mix beans to ensure that the nutrition that has been provided has solid nutrients.
On the other hand, in the whole month of July, South Africa is celebrated for former president Nelson Mandela’s birthday, the motto that most of the people use is “Mandela day, take action, inspire change and make every day a Mandela day”. The actions and activities include food and nutrition, education and literacy, sanitation, shelter, and many others. Besides, on the 18th of July specifically, the United Nations General Assembly declared and assigned as Nelson Mandela International Day. And as part of Nelson Mandela’s Legacy, Mandela Day calls for all South Africans to make a positive difference by ensuring sustainable development goals for the country.
However, a quote says that “Remember that the happiest people are not those getting more, but those giving more” H. Jackson Brown. I’ve always the sense of giving more to the people instead of getting more. Giving generously my time – the least I could- made me feel extremely happy and I also discovered that everyone’s small action or difference brings a great change to the community, nation and the whole world. One million meals have been packed up on that day for the students.
